Lance Doty is an award-winning film director, producer and writer who has the uncommon ability to continuously hone and mesh these necessary crafts to create the highest quality filmmaking. His breadth and depth of experience over the years speak for themselves. From hands–on commercial production to feature film and commercial direction to post-production supervision, he is able to take a project from concept to completion, through the whole continuum.
Earlier in his career, as a partner/producer (and sometime art-director) for Ogilvy, he produced award-winning campaigns for American Express, IBM, Kodak (“Gremlin” and “Pie Plate”), Duracell (“Puttermans”), Jaguar and Hershey’s. It was here that Doty first gained invaluable directorial exposure by working alongside some of the greatest commercial directors in the industry, including Barry Sonnenfeld (THE ADDAMS FAMILY, MEN IN BLACK). Sonnenfeld enjoyed his commercial collaboration with Doty so much that he pursuaded Doty to work alongside him while making the MGM cult-classic GET SHORTY (John Travolta, Gene Hackman, Danny Devito). This experience gave Doty a first-hand education in feature filmmaking.
Today, Doty is a partner in Homestead Films, Homestead Editorial and aWounded Knee. With Homestead Films, Doty directs commercials and web films, working with agencies such as The Martin Agency, The Brooklyn Brothers, Strawberry Frog, Ogilvy, Saatchi and Grey.
Homestead Editorial is an award-winning post-production boutique that has been in the industry since 1997. It has collaborated work on major campaigns for Audi, Firestone, Hershey’s and Coke, among others. At Homestead Editorial, Doty has served as Executive Producer and post-production supervisor for a range of independent films and documentaries, including “The Concert for New York City” (Jerry Seinfeld) and several collaborations with Academy Award-nominated animator Bill Plympton, the most recent being IDIOTS AND ANGELS.
aWounded Knee produces independent films and documentaries. Doty’s directorial features under aWounded Knee include SHOOT FIRST AND PRAY YOU LIVE (Jim Gaffigan) and NOISE (Ally Sheedy and Trish Goff) – both of which he also served as writer on the film. SHOOT FIRST, a “spaghetti” influenced stylized Western, was the winner of the Independent Spirit Award at the 2008 Santa Fe Film Festival. It was acquired and distributed domestically in 2009 by Lionsgate. From the success of that film, Doty was selected as a finalist for the prestigious Heineken Red Star Award for innovative filmmaking. NOISE, a searing city drama, garnered awards at the Florida International Film Festival, New Orleans International Film Festival, Breckendridge Film, River Run and the Black Point Film Festival. NOISE was acquired and distributed domestically by ThinkFilms.
Beyond Doty’s accomplishments, it is his sense of humor, enthusiasm and passion for the work that have made him popular with clients and with talent, in front of and behind the camera.
Doty earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from James Madison University, Harrisonburg, Virginia. He attended the university on a football scholarship. More recently, Doty served on the Board of Directors of the Association of Independent Creative Editors (AICE).
He is married and the father of three young boys. The family resides in Manhattan, New York City.
